  I've had mandatory insurance since I was 18. Whether on my car or eventually my house it was a thing you had to have. I started using Joe Smitherman when I got my second house and I decided to switch over my house and car. I had two major incidents that are why I am giving this glowing review. A flood in my basement, which throughout the entire thing he responded to all my calls immediately and advised me what I needed to do. It was a pleasure knowing that my insurance agent was completely available and also that he was working in my favor to figure out how best we could handle this as I was shop-vaccing water out of my house. I also had my car vandalized and also required his assistance (broken mirror). It again was everything I would hope for in an insurance agent. In the day and age of the online insurance vendors driving the price of insurance down (I used to be with Progressive, which was originally a great price), it was amazing that AmFam was able to not only compete with the online vendors in price but that I knew the name of my insurance agent and just leaned on him when I actually needed to invoke my insurance. I don't think anything replaces that feeling of being able to just phone your insurance agent and complain at them or ask for their help. I am nothing but pleased with my interactions with Joe. It's like having the ease and cost effectiveness of a Progressive or eSurance, but being able to pick up the phone and call your actual insurance agent. No hold, no shenanigans, just your actual insurance agent. I ended up meeting Joe later on at a community function and he ended up being as nice he had always been when I was a panicked customer. That is why I have written this wordy review. In short, cost competitive, reliable insurance. I might sound like a shill, but sadly I moved out to the East Coast and have since had to contact my new insurance (Joe let me know he couldn't beat prices out here because he wasn't in this market...again more honesty) company a few times (Baltimore car vandalism) and the experience is nothing like AmFam. I sit on hold, etc. If I move back the the Midwest, I know exactly who I am looking up.
